The
first passenger car called "Dongfeng" in China came
into birth in FAW in April 1958. The meaning of the name of
the car came from the famous statement of late Chinese leader-Chairman
Mao: "Eastern wind prevails over western wind".
Engine of Dongfeng car copied from "Benz 190", it
also took a reference from "Simca-VDT" in its chassis
and body. A golden dragon symbol was placed on the front top
of the car---it is well known that dragon always stands for
China in the world.
On May 12th, 1958, "Dongfeng" car was sent to Beijing.
At 2 o'clock PM on the 21st the same month, Chairman Mao,
Lin Boqu as well as some other state leaders took a drive
in this car in Zhongnanhai. Chaiman Mao said in delight "We
finally sit in the passenger car made by ourselves."
